Nokia Kinetic Concept Design Stands Up On Notifications

Creative designer Jeremy Innes-Hopkins has an interesting concept phone called the Nokia Kinetic. The phone responds to notifications through movement. An electromagnet in the base of the phone allows weight to be shifted which causes the phone to stand up when receiving a call, for example.

To dismiss a call, the user can simply give the phone a gentle tap, causing it to fall back down again and return to standby mode. There’s no word on whether this design will make it to real life, but it’s an interesting concept that could be very useful. Standing up on its own is a much cooler notification than vibrate. We also won’t need to buy an additional phone stand accessory if it can do it by itself.

Would you like to see this kind of technology in upcoming Nokia phones?

PlayStation Vita (PSP Vita)

Sony's next-generation PlayStation Portable got its North American debut today at E3, as well as a new name--PlayStation Vita.

The device, which Sony unveiled in Japan in January, comes with two joysticks, multitouch 5-inch OLED screen, front and rear touchpads, and front and rear cameras for augmented reality.

"Vita means life," said Kazuo Hirai, president and group chief executive officer of Sony Computer Entertainment. "And we're confident that Vita will be the first product that blurs the lines between reality and interactive entertainment."

The Wi-Fi model will run $249, and a model that includes 3G and Wi-Fi will cost $299. Sony said it will be available for the holidays.

One of the first titles for Vita will be Uncharted: Golden Abyss. The device takes advantage of visually advanced technology that uses water shaders and dynamic lighting to create slick graphics on such a small gadget. And it features a touch screen that lets gamers move characters, for example, using joysticks or by tapping on the screen--or by using a combination of the two.

A passel of developers have agreed to provide launch titles, including the Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, and Activision. And during a presentation, Bioshock's Ken Levine announced plans to develop an as-yet-unnamed game for the NGP.

"This is going to be interesting too," Levine said, holding up an NGP device.
Sony first unveiled the device in January. Back then, the company disclosed many of the tech specs, including the fact that it has an ARM Cortex A9 (core) CPU, and a SGX543MP4+ GPU, and a Sixaxis motion-sensing system.

Duke Nukem Forever Finally Arrives

Fresh off 15 years of recovering from his last lust-filled, muscle-popping adventure, Duke Nukem is finally back to chomp on cigars, chow down on cheesecake, and challenge ugly aliens to go ahead and make his day.
Duke Nukem Forever hits U.K. shelves Friday at midnight local time and will arrive in the U.S. on June 14. You better believe it's got an M rating. The title is also being released Friday in all non-U.S. territories.
"June 10 in the UK will forever be celebrated as the day that the legendary Duke Nukem Forever went from video game folklore to Earth shattering reality," Christoph Hartmann, president of publisher Take-Two Interactive subsidiary 2K Games, said in a speech not a little reminiscent of the Duke's own massive self-regard.
Duke Nukem screenshot
"For 15 years fans have waited in limbo just yearning to hear those two little lovely words strung together, 'Now Available.' Today, the acronym 'DNF' changes its meaning to a 'Day to Never Forget.' I am proud to announce that the wait is finally over and that Duke Nukem Forever is truly Now Available."
So what's in store for Duke Nukem fans? The 2K copy paints a sordid picture of the new and improved "steroidal One-Man army who never fails and always gets the babes":
"Shoot hoops, lift weights, read adult magazines, draw crude messages on whiteboards or ogle the many hot women that occupy Duke's life—that is if you can pull yourself away from destroying alien invaders."

France Bans Words, ‘Twitter’ And ‘Facebook’ From TV/Radio

France has, and continues to ban the names of both social networking sites from being spoken on radio or television, unless of course, the terms are part of a news story. Before you go crazy, the reasoning isn’t quite as absurd as our use of “Freedom Fries.”

The ban dates back to a 1992 decree (law issued by head of state) that claims the mentioning of such names as an act of advertising. France believes that saying “Facebook” or “Twitter” is preferential toward successful social networking sites, and takes the spotlight from other lesser known social networkingsites.

A spokesperson for France’s Conseil Superieur de l’Audiovisuel (CSA), Christine Kelly, explains, “Why give preference to Facebook, which is worth billions of dollars, when there are many other social networksthat are struggling for recognition…This would be a distortion of competition. If we allow Facebook andTwitter to be cited on air, it’s opening a Pandora’s Box– other social networks will complain to us saying, ‘why not us?’”

Sony Ericsson boosts Xperia Arc and Play to 2.3.3, includes Facebook integration

Well, Sony Ericsson might just deserve a gold star for effort. A week ago we reported that a possible rollout of the long-rumored Facebook integration update would come to select Xperia series phones this week, and we're seeing the process begin today. The recipients of this particular push are the Arc and Play, though it will come to all new Xperia devices down the road. While the download includes Android 2.3.3, the major focus is on "Facebook Inside Xperia," another way for you to sync your social media with other aspects of your phone, such as contacts, calendar, and photo gallery. Other improvements in the package include WiFi stability, improved battery performance, HD video recording performance (Arc only), and bug fixes. Don't stress if your phone hasn't seen the update yet; Sony Ericsson says it's rolling it out gradually due to issues with individual markets and carrier branding. No specific timeframe was given, though the company mentioned that "it can take a while." Should you be one of the lucky recipients to get it today, however, sound off in the comments below.

EBay and its online payment unit, PayPal Inc, on Thursday sued Google Inc and two executives for stealing trade secrets related to mobile payment systems.

The two executives, Osama Bedier and Stephanie Tilenius, were formerly with PayPal and led the launch on Thursday of Google's own mobile payment system in partnership with MasterCard, Citigroup and phone company Sprint.
The suit highlights the growing battle by a wide range of companies from traditional finance to Silicon Valley trying to take a major stake in what has been described as a $1 trillion opportunity in mobile payments. The mobile phone is seen as the digital personal wallet of the future.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Now the Best Selling Video Game of All Time

The iPad 2 Shows Why Apple Doesn’t Need A Gaming Console

Microsoft has the XBox 360. Sony sells the PlayStation 3. Nintendo offers the family-friendly Wii. Apple, by contrast, doesn’t sell a gaming console.
Or does it? Load medieval fighting game Infinity Blade onto the iPad 2, hook it up to a high-definition television using Apple’s $39 digital AV adapter and it can be hard to tell.
Apple claims the new version of its tablet computer offers 9x the graphics performance of the old model — and game developerrs report the new tablet’s graphics capabilities are impressive. “Apple surprised us,” says Rob Murray, Chief Executive of game developer Firemint.

Riding in the Google Car That Drives Itself [VIDEO]

The self-driving car that Google revealed to the world last October made an appearance

The car itself traveled from San Francisco to Long Beach, California, for the conference as part of Google’s ongoing tests. While Thrun tells me he thinks we’ll see self-driving cars in the hands of consumers within our lifetimes, he notes that at this time, “It’s really just a science project … pushing the boundaries of what’s possible

Limitations of the vehicle currently include dealing with weather, as well as capturing the imagery and data necessary to allow the car to do things such as stop at red lights and observe speed limits (most of this work has been limited to the Bay Area for now).
Nonetheless, one can’t help be impressed by what Google has accomplished thus far, with its test drive clearly set up to show off just how far along the technology is (if not to make this blogger slightly nauseous after lunch).
Check our videos from inside and outside the car below:

Apple iPad 2 goes live with dual-core A5 CPU, white one too

Just as expected today Apple announced the successor of their extremely popular iPad tablet. The iPad 2 comes with a dual-core A5 CPU and retains the 9.7" screen diagonal and the XGA resolution (1024 x 768 pixels) of its predecessor.

Apple has added a couple of video-call cameras to the iPad 2. The one on the back does 720p video and 0.7MP images (960 x 720 px), much like the iPod Touch 4G. The front-facing snapper only goes as high as VGA on both stills and video.
Thanks to those shooters the iPad 2 can now do Facetime calling over Wi-Fi.

Nokia and Microsoft enter strategic alliance on Windows Phone, Bing, Xbox Live and more

It's happened. Former Microsoft exec and current Nokia CEO Stephen Elop has married his future and his past in the holy matrimony of a "strategic alliance." Windows Phone is becoming Nokia's "principal smartphone strategy," but there's a lot more to this hookup -- scope out the official press release just after the break. Microsoft's Bing and adCenter will provide search and ad services across Nokia devices, while Nokia will look to innovate "on top of the platform" with things like its traditional strength in imaging. Ovi Maps will be a core part of Microsoft's mapping services and will be integrated with Bing, while Nokia's content store will be integrated into (read: assimilated by) Microsoft's Marketplace. Xbox Live and Office will also, as is to be expected, feature on these brave new Microkia handsets. An open letter on Nokia's Conversations site, penned jointly by Stephen Elop and Steve Ballmer, sets out the foregoing details along with the following statement of intent:
"There are other mobile ecosystems. We will disrupt them. There will be challenges. We will overcome them. Success requires speed. We will be swift. Together, we see the opportunity, and we have the will, the resources and the drive to succeed."

Motorola Xoom

Here it is, after all the marketing, the pricing and whatnot; the Motorola Xoom is one piece of technology that has created such a buzz prior to its release. One of these reasons is that this will be the first device that would run Android 3.0 Honeycomb (i.e. the tablet-specific Android). The great guys at Engadget and SlashGear have gotten themselves the tablet and you can head there for detailed hands-on reviews but for the gist of what one can expect out of this Verizon tablet, scroll below for some insights.

Test Drive Unlimited 2

Beautiful game world
Massive open world
Accessible controls
Tons of missions and activities
Uneven framerates on PC
Intrusive DRM
Unstable game servers
Some strange lifestyle activities

Let me start by clarifying one very basic and often misunderstood fact about the first Test Drive Unlimited game, and this, its follow-up. This is not a racing game. Yes, there are times when you will participate in car races, but you do that even in Grand Theft Auto. Test Drive Unlimited is a driving game that encompasses and aims to bring to your living room the complete car experience, right from walking into a swanky showroom and inspecting the car you want to buy in minute detail, to taking it out for a leisurely drive along the coast. Like Gran Turismo, Test Drive Unlimited is about a love for cars, but it doesn’t haunt you with realistic car handling nor does it take itself too seriously. Get in and drive; it’s really that simple, and its beauty lies in that simplicity and freedom.

Rad Company

While the basic formula has made it over to TDU2 intact, developers Eden Games have done a whole lot more to build upon it. TDU2 is an open world game, and while in the first game Oahu, Hawaii was your playground, this time there’s a new, beautiful location – Ibiza, while Oahu returns with a significant visual upgrade. Both islands are massive and it will take you well over 20 hours to even explore both islands, let alone completing the missions on them. While the first game had you restricted to the tarmac, the islands are now open to you in their entirety, paving the way for off-road vehicles and SUVs and events revolving around them. You now also have day and night transitions as well as dynamic weather, and the game looks absolutely stunning at night and when it’s raining.

It’s HTC in the lead, bringing us yet another Windows Phone 7 handset - enter the HTC HD 7. I wasn't altogether too pleased with their initial offering, i.e. The HTC 7 Mozart. While the handset proved to be mediocre at best, the new look and feel of the Windows Mobile UI didn't really do it for me either. Having said that, their latest offering had the community wanting more and I was hoping that that's just what HD7 would offer. Here’s a closer look.

2011 may just as well turn out to be the year of the shooter. This once popular genre had been put on the backburner since the past two years but in 2011, it’s back with a vengeance. You have tons of new IPs in addition to the resurrection of one very, very special one. Let the good times begin.

Sony Officially Unveils Their N-Gage, The Xperia Play

For a while a lot of people thought that Sony had kind of given up on the PSP as a gaming platform, and were going to simply roll it into one of their Android-powered smartphones in the form of a PSP phone. Well thankfully the surprise reveal of their NGP (aka the PSP2) put those rumors to rest, but it was clear that Sony still had something in development, and it turns out that something is called the Xperia Play.
